DEFINING SPACES WITH LIGHTING
Dilemma: The existing fluorescent lighting was outdated, unattractive and one-dimensional—it gave off a flat, general light but otherwise added nothing to the space. We needed a solution that would help define separate kids’ and adult spaces in one large, open area, add functionality and create a more interesting look.
Solution: We introduced contemporary ceiling- and wall-mounted fixtures and a floor lamp to not only define the spaces, but also add task and accent lighting as well as better general lighting.
On the grownup side, we replaced two large fluorescent fixtures that had been flush-mounted on the sloped ceiling with a rail lighting system suspended from cables. This allowed the rails to lay out horizontally over the seating area, eliminating the awkward angle and creating a horizontal plane that tied in with the other long horizontal elements in the room.
We arced two identical curved rails toward each other, making this space feel more intimate. Then we clamped on two types of fixtures: white frosted glass pendants, which serve as general, overall lighting; and directional spots that can be angled to provide task and accent lighting for reading, accenting the console table, and highlighting the beautiful glass art focal point.
The kids’ side already gets bright ambient light from the second-story walkway overlooking this side of the living room. We upped the general lighting with a pair of wall sconces that are also an accent feature. The white frosted glass in the sconces ties in with the pendants on the grownup side, and the dark metal accents add a layer of texture.
Finally, a floor lamp creates a whimsical and functional place for reading and placing snacks and crayons.
The new lighting scheme not only provides much-needed general, task and accent lighting, it also helps define spaces, create a mood and add whole new layers of visual interest.
