Q & A

What types of hazardous building materials might have been used in the construction of your residence?
There are potentially many:
  • Lead paint: Used in homes built in before the 1970s
  • Arsenic ceiling and wall materials
  • Asbestos: Electrical wires and surfacing materials, floor tile and mastic, acoustic ceilings (popcorn ceilings), linoleum, ceramic tiles, roofing materials, sidings and caulkings.
What should you do or how cost-effective would it be to remove these items?
After identifying a potentially hazardous material, it is always best to hire a licensed professional to handle the abatement/remediation. You simply cannot put a price tag on someone’s health.
What could happen if these hazardous materials are disturbed, such as during renovation activities?
There could be long-term health effects. Lead paint has been proven to be hazardous to young children because it can cause nerve and growth problems. Prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and/or mesothelioma.
