Tips

Diagramming your countertop will help you calculate cost. On an 8x11 sheet of paper (graph paper works best) make an overview diagram of your countertop. Note dimensions rounded up to the nearest inch. Next, calculate the square footage: multiply length times width, and if you used inches, then divide by 144 for your square footage. Finally, fax or email your diagram to a fabricator for pricing. Good fabricators will call you back and go over the diagram with you to make sure everything is included.
Countertops in small to medium-size kitchens usually cover about 40 to 60 square feet. It costs about $100 per square foot to supply, fabricate and install custom countertops using average-priced stone, or $4,000 to $6,000 for most kitchens. Is this within your budget?

Know the difference between custom versus prefabricated countertops. Prefabricated countertops are premade and cut overseas, usually in China. They come in 8- and 9-foot lengths by a 26-inch width and are finished with a fabricated edge on one long side and one short side. Prefab panels also come in four larger sizes: 8- and 9-foot lengths by 36- and 42-inch widths. These larger panels have an edge detail on two long sides and one short side and are used on peninsulas and islands. The best thing about prefabricated panels is the pricing: they cost about 25% less than custom-made. The drawbacks are limited color selection, edge details limited to bullnose, unaligned veining in adjacent panels, peninsulas and islands limited to rectangular shapes, and usually more seams in countertops.
Custom-made countertops are made from large panels (random slabs) that range from approximately 48x96 inches to 120x72 inches. The average granite slab is about 114x68 inches, with prices averaging about $20 per square foot. The edges are unfinished and left for the fabricator to make. Random slabs allow customization to almost any size and shape, which is one reason they are used in finer homes. Todd Branson Stoneworks prefers to work with random slabs: the finished product always reflects the higher quality.

What people are saying...

Thank you so much for doing the work on our countertops! They turned out better than I could have possibly imagined. I am so glad my husband picked you rather than the other guy we have used in the past. What a difference!” – Portlock, 2008

Todd, thank you so much for doing such a great job and being so easy to work with. I recommend you to everybody. Thanks again to you and your crew.” – Kailua, 2007

We have remodeled three of our homes in the past 10 years, two in California and this one in Portlock. I must say this is the finest workmanship ever. At first my wife and I were a bit skeptical because your price was higher than the other proposals. Now we are both delighted with how things turned out. Our kitchen is beautiful. I also wanted to thank you for the freebee at the chiseled backsplash.” – Portlock, 2008

I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate the wonderful job you did at our Waikiki condo. The Rainforest slab shower turned out fantastic. The office, art niches, and kitchen are equally beautiful. I love my Onyx bathroom countertops. Thank you for being patient with all the changes we made along the way. Your suggestions were very helpful. You are welcome to gather photos for your portfolio.” – Honolulu, 2008

Thank you for all the hard work you and your men did at our home in Hanalei. We really appreciate all your efforts. Our architect said it is the best workmanship he has seen. When we have company everyone is just blown away when they walk in the kitchen and see the full backsplash. Thank you for recommending it. Mahalo once again Todd, we will give your name to others.” – Kauai, 2008
