Q: My rooms are very small. If I paint them white, will they look larger?
A: No, the rooms will still look small–and they will also be sterile and uninteresting. Accept the room for the size it is and make it more inviting. Here’s how to do that.
Color on the walls helps to keep the furniture visually in place. Choose a color that complements or is present in the fabric, and paint the walls in a soft shade of that color. If the sofa is in a bold pattern, try softening it with pillows in solid colors taken from the sofa but in lighter tones. If selecting new fabrics, use one or two fabrics in the same soft colors throughout. Select small patterns in soft colors rather than bold patterns which seem to ‘attack’. Keep accessories interesting and at a minimum.
If you are purchasing new furniture, select pieces in a light scale and in light woods or painted finishes. Exposed legs make furniture look lighter. A glass cocktail table seems to float. Look at all your colors and fabrics together and at different times of the day. Even the tiniest room can become a very pleasant place to be.
