Question: How do I accessorize a small space?
Answer: The worst thing you can do to a small space is clutter it up with a bunch of accessories. Try to use smaller-scale accessories. Large accessories have a tendency to overpower smaller furniture. You want to give the illusion of larger furniture, so using smaller accessories will help achieve this.
Question: My bookcase looks boring with just books. Is there a way to style it up?
Answer: Yes, your bookshelves should not be filled entirely with books. Break up the monotony of your book collection with a large shell, picture frames or a small potted succulent.
Question: How do I soften up a room with accessories?
Answer: Throws are in! Add a throw to the arm of a sofa. Add another throw to a lounge chair in your bedroom. This is another good way of adding texture and color to a room. Another way to soften up a room is by adding a couple of down-filled accent pillows to your sofa and lounge chairs. Coordinate the colors to match your sofa fabric or artwork in the space.
Question: How do I accessorize my bathroom?
Answer: First of all, there should be no products visible on any of your countertops. That is what drawers and cabinets are for. No one wants to see your lotion collection or the perfume you wear. The best way to accessorize your bathroom is KEEP IT SIMPLE! If you have a small bathroom, a potted orchid or bromeliad in the corner will make a big impact. Absolutely no store-bought soap pumps either. If you need to have liquid soap, transfer it into a nice ceramic dispenser. Always cover your tissue box. If you have a lot of countertop space, it is always nice to add a wood bowl with rolled hand towels to create a spa atmosphere.
Question: Are there general rules of thumb to go by when accessorizing a space?
Answer: Yes, it is actually very simple and works every time: on a side table, place three items. Here's one classic solution: a vase, some stacked books and a picture frame with a photo of someone you love. Another rule is don't put glass on glass. If you have a glass table, putting a glass bowl on it will get lost in the design. Too much of one material will cause the space to feel unbalanced. If you need to create height with accessories, a large painting or mirror will do the trick.
Question: Is there a unique way of incorporating “green living” into my space?
Answer: Sustainable style is very popular now. Using reclaimed woods as much as possible is a no-brainer. Floor coverings are a great, simple way to create a bold new style while staying eco-friendly. Jute, flax, linen, wool, sisal or coir rugs are long-lasting and fashionable. They are all natural fibers and nontoxic. Sisal and coir rugs are antistatic and antibacterial. They are both durable fibers and have terrific natural coloring. Using pillows made of water hyacinth are another great way to "do your part." Water hyacinth is used to make many home accessories nowadays. This invasive plant is finally doing some good.
