Design Dilemmas / Bathrooms

help I have one small and ugly 1970 bathroom. How can I make it feel bigger, brighter and cleaner?

Description:

I have only one bathroom for myself, husband, son and guests. It is so funky, with linoleum from the 70s and very minimal space. I want to tile the floor and tub surround and maybe go to a small sink and vanity but have a tight budget and no idea what colors will be best to make it seem bigger. Oh yes, we are surrounded by red dirt so over time a light color will stain even with a maniacal cleaner.

I would think that being the only bathroom, you would need that vanity space. And it is bright and clean. Toilet and bathtub look good too. Since budget is tight, I would consider vinyl that looks like stone or tile and spend your money on tile for the bathtub surround. Then you could keep the shower curtain open which would make the space feel larger. A pleasant paint color (not white) and nice accents (not white or beige) would really make the space look nice. If you have extra money, then consider a new countertop and new hardware. Good luck! I can't wait to see you outcome in the Showcase section.

Thank you. I am intrigued by trying a paint color not white. I also like the idea of having a tub surround that isn't to be hidden. I kind of felt my budget would have to include the same tile for floor and surround but, according to your advice, maybe not. How fun! Aloha, Lise

How about trying a darker tile with slight uneven streaks to hide the potential red dirt issue. Maybe something the complements the sink counter top if you are not planning to replace it.

Can't really see the whole room, but, it looks as if the vanity is fairly new and provides a lot of storage. You haven't said if you intend to replace it, if so, I would suggest a pedestal sink because it would automatically make the space appear larger due to open space underneath. If you are keeping the vanity, perhaps you could paint it and the floors black, you'd be surprised how a dark color especially black would make it look sophisticated, and combined with all of the white fixtures it is an easy fix. Take out the rug and exchange the shower curtain for something that is more textural. If you have any vertical space, take advantage of it. Hope this helps.

The black paint would also make it appear larger.
