Design Dilemmas / Kitchens

Calacatta Marble

Description:

We are building a new home with a focal point to our kitchen. We have purchased this Calacatta marble for our kitchen island. We are undecided on the material to use for the peripheral kitchen counter tops for the rest of the kitchen. We are aiming toward a contemporary, island-style family home. We look forward to the baking and cooking on the marble surface. For now, we decided on selecting Sapelle cabinet doors. We'll have plenty of stainless steel, glass and windows in our kitchen. Considering on using a Silestone called Apina White (View at http://www.silestoneusa.com/colors/colors.cfm?ColorID=385) for the rest of the countertops. We, also, contemplated a light green & white granite (Costa Esmeralda) or a dark grey quartz (Storm Grey [photo attached is lighter grey; however, it is actually darker grey]). It's endless! Black was too strong of a contrast with the polished marble. Our kitchen will be open to the family room. We want to achieve a clean, simple-looking, sleek, casual kitchen (not formal). Any opinions on the best counter top to surround this beautiful marble?

One thing I've learned from Cathy is using the 60-30-10 rule. Choosing a dominant style and secondary style helped me with my decisions. Once you've chosen a dominant style and a dominant color, other choices may fall into place. Another consideration is any items you already have that you want to incorporate into the space. Do you have personal items that fall into a certain style? Will these items be your 10% accent pieces or do you have pieces that need to fall into the primary or secondary styles of the home. If you want to really showcase the marble as your primary piece, then choose a complimentary color for the peripheral counter top.

GREAT advice!!! It's been awhile since I went to Cathy's workshop, so I will go back to review my notes and handbook. Since I last posted these photos, we decided to select a Silestone called Alpina White for the peripheral kitchen counters to compliment the marble. I guess our 60% is the wood floors and cabinets throughout our home; 30% is the Calacatta marble + Alpina white Silestone; and 10% decorative green accents. THANKS, again!
