Design Dilemmas / Outdoor Areas

Outdoor Blahs

Description:

This outdoor furniture is a bright white and very plain looking in my lanai. It's good quality and expensive and I really don't want to get rid of it. Got any ideas for help?

Maybe you should buy other chairs to mix up the set.

The white table and chairs really stick out in the photo with the neutral colors that are in the outdoor area. Maybe you could change the backing on the chairs to soften up this look.

Since your lanai seems to be well protected, the addition of seat cushions and accent pillows in neutral tones would soften the look (and the seating). A pop of color on the accent pillows might bring added interest and a simple centerpiece in wood, rattan or other might also help soften things up.

Have you considered getting a big ol painting of say a whale to pop up on the wall in place of the flower vase?

I don't get Dave and his whale. Agree with Cassandra.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I liked the idea of adding neutral tones and I found out that I can replace the slings on my chairs pretty inexpensively. By changing out the slings this will soften the stark white color of my table and blend better with my lanai area.

What do you think of the changes now? I changed out the slings on my patio chairs to tie in with the neutral colors in this outdoor area.

oh wow! that's a lot better! that color change is easier on the eye and ties in better w/ the other elements.

Nice change to the slings! It blends nicely with the flooring now.

I like the new slings. I have also had similar furniture professionally painted--they use a powder coat method that turns out fantastic and it isn't too expensive.

Powder coat the furniture dark bronze on the white areas...this imitate the outdoor furniture in the high end magazines.....It will also pull the color out of your floors and the other furniture....Take the sofa off the back wall and set it at an angle to the corner..maybe a tree or the lamp behind it to add coziness to the area and maybe mimic the angle of the table to make it flow....lines of the furniture do not have to follow the lines of the walls. This looks like a super area for outdoor parties and summer dinners!!!!! Lets see what you do!

Elaine, You have some great comments, I'm going to borrow some of your suggestions for my home, thanks!

What a difference! Now the white goes with window trim ,etc. I was also thinking about changing the white metal. And now I am wondering where in Hawaii you could have that process done??? I have a nice sectional but the legs are chrome and it is not matching my new scheme. It'd look really nice with a different metal finish.
