Description:
We want to improve the landscaping of our house, especially in the elevated area in the back yard. We also want to paint our house. I was thinking of cream with sage trim, but nearly all of our neighbor houses are painted a cream color already. Any color scheme and landscaping suggestions?

It appears as though your house is beige with either taupe or brown trim (it's hard to tell). I think the beige with the taupe is a good choice, but I'd use a white as a secondary color around the windows to add some visual interest. If you have too much color on your house it can compete with your landscaping. As for the landscaping I'd clean up what you have by either removing a lot of the old landscaping or cutting back. It appears you have a lot of high windows, if you let the foilage grow over them you lose a lot of interior light. After you've edited what you already have I'd layer the landscaping around the house by using different greens (maybe a darker green color for plans in the background with a plant with color and then perhaps something with a more yellow green color or a varigated leaf in front. Make sure the different layers are of different heights so you have some visual interest. As for color, you can either choose something favorite such as torch ginger, heliconia, gardenias or choose a plant with a flower the same color as an accent color in your living room. This way the color leads into your home and is a warm and inviting entry. You need to focus your eye on your front door. A new walkway of slate (echoing the colors of your house with some darker colors to ground the walkway) or some decomposed granite will do the same. As for the upper level, you can do the same layering pattern. A small water feature the cascades down the wall would add interest and provide a soothing sound as you sit. You could also place some green plants in colorful pots around your lanai area or choose a coordinating color from the house for your potted plants and fill the pots with color. You have a beautiful lawn and I know your home will be beautiful. Just remember that color, layering and texture work outside as well as inside. Good luck on your project!

I could imagine that plants along the stonewall or vines on the wall is a simple, easy way to add beauty for that side of the house. A waterfall, fish pond or grotto would also look great at the far end.

I would paint the house sage with cream trim, to blend in with the fence in the back. Plant vines with white flowers up the trellice, remove clutter and feature one nice table chair set, with a nice fabric accent color-orange comes to mind. A couple of nice colorful flowers in pots to add color and interest, and texture! and voila!

How about a nice shade of grey with white trim to match white vinyl fencing. Add some color in landscape; bougainvilla, maybe in far corner , bird of paradise, etc.. Also would suggest a couple of very large potted plants on patio.
