How about if you painted the walls a little deeper to match the "Accent Stripe of Tile" in the shower area... then the same color would continue to flow. Also I would lose the ducks and pastel blues and go for a warmer neutral or a nice pop of a warm color.
Is installing a sliding glass door in place of the shower curtain out of the question? That would make it seem more spacious AND kick it up a style notch.
To repeat: color to match tile, clear shower curtain or a modern glass door, shelves with sliding doors for the clutter,
and towels to blend in. All one color scheme! Neutral feeling.
YES a sliding glass door would work better, go for a frameless look - stay away from all the aluminum or bronze frames. try a light blue paint, it's expansive and restful. put away all the clutter, use matching WHITE towels -- keep the eyes looking thru rather than dart around the multiple colors. good luck!
If you can do without bathroom storage, how about a pedestal sink? They also have toilets that take up minimal space with the tank actually built into the wall. Also, need to coordinate wall color with tile color.

what about a clear see through shower curtain to visually open up your space?
