DEFINING SPACES WITH FURNITURE

Dilemma: Faced with a big, open floor plan with no definition of space and two TVs on the same wall, we needed to define one side as more sophisticated and grownup-friendly, and the other as a playful, functional space for the Agenas’ four kids.

Before After
Furniture Ottomans

Solution: Use furniture to create a sense of two distinct spaces.

To make both areas comfortable for TV viewing and lounging, we started with microfiber sofas facing each TV screen. Shag-like area rugs were placed under the front feet of each sofa to further define these spaces.

We kept the kids’ side more open to allow for easy running and tumbling around. Two comfy leather ottomans front their sofa, serving as extra seating as well as storage for their array of gaming accessories. The ottomans are functional and fun: The tops can be flipped over to hold snacks and drinks, and the kid-size cubes are easy enough for even 3-year-old Sarah to move around.

Furniture Coffee Table

On the grownups’ side, a chrome-and-glass coffee table in front of the sofa lends an air of contemporary sophistication. Two accent chairs complete a cozy seating arrangement and partially close off this side. While the backs of the chairs face the kids’ side, the bamboo circular accents give the chairs open, interesting backs and make them attractive from any angle. These are also lightweight and can easily be picked up and turned around to face the kids’ area.

The furniture choices and placement create two areas with distinct character and function. Next in our Makeover Style Tip Series, we’ll explain how we used lighting to further the effect.
