TWO TVs ON THE SAME WALL

Dilemma: One of the first things you noticed upon entering the home were two big-screen TVs staring right back at you. Getting rid of one TV was not an option.

Before After
TV on Kid’s Side

Solution: We had to somehow disguise or minimize one of the TVs.

Because we would be framing out the walls to drywall over the original tongue-and-groove construction, we decided to take the opportunity to build in a six-inch-deep niche for the TV on the kids’ side. This created architectural interest that was further enhanced by the orange accent color, highlighting the space around this TV.

On the grownups’ side we built in another TV niche, above which we added a shallow shelf TV on Grownup’s Side that held a pair of custom sliding art panels. The panels serve two purposes: they provide a focal point for the room when the TV is not in use, and they also conceal the second TV.

Does the focal point compete with the kids’ TV against its orange accent color? No, because the accent is only inside the niche, and the gold-orange color ties in with the copper tones in the artwork.

The Agenas can still enjoy their two TVs, yet when you walk into the room, one TV is enhanced against its fresh accent color, and the other is completely disguised with a beautiful work of art.

Who Did What

Waialae Plumbing & Construction did the drywall, built-in niches and the shelf above the artwork, TheDudesHawaii.com did the custom glass art, and Akamai Painting painted the drywall and TV niche.
