HORIZONTAL LINES
Dilemma: We had a big, open space with no architectural detail or interest, and several issues that would require minor construction.
Solution: Create some strong lines to add dimension, visual strength and architectural interest.
When we decided to turn the problematic beam cutting down the middle of the living room into a feature, we attached to it a small floating shelf stained a dark ebony color. That created a strong horizontal element that we decided to repeat.
We carried the theme throughout the room: in the valance for the drapery treatment running along one wall,
in a small shelf under the kids’ TV, and in a floating shelf that holds up the sliding panels of the art glass focal point. All were stained in the same dark ebony color for consistency.
Repeating this element of strong, dark horizontal lines creates a theme that helps unify the room, adds balance to different areas, ties in with the Agenas’ warm, contemporary scheme, and creates architectural detail where there was none.
Who Did What
Waialae Plumbing and Construction built the custom shelves,
and The Dudes Hawaii stained them.
